New Single Shot Vaccine for Myxy and RHD

Merck Animal Health (known as MSD Animal Health outside the USA and Canada) is launching NOBIVAC? Myxo-RHD in the European Union, the first single shot vaccine that protects rabbits for 12 months against both Myxomatosis and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD).

Available in single dose vials, the vaccine is aimed specifically at pet rabbits and can be used from the age of five weeks onwards. Immunity is provided within three weeks of administration and as a result of deleting two virulence factors in the genome the vaccine has minimal side effects.

Speaking about the launch of NOBIVAC Myxo-RHD, Jac Bergman, DVM and Global Marketing Director for small animal vaccines at Merck Animal Health comments: ?This single dose vaccine against both Myxomatosis and RHD is an innovative, new generation product, giving veterinarians the opportunity to offer comprehensive, year-long immunization to pet rabbits. It also gives veterinarians the chance to make owners aware of the importance of taking their pet to their local veterinary practice for regular health checks. Understanding more about their pets enriches the bond between pet and owner - the results are more enjoyment for the owner and a happier healthier life for the rabbit, all supported by the expertise of their local veterinarian.?

NOBIVAC Myxo-RHD provides veterinarians with the opportunity to inform and educate rabbit owners on the importance of vaccination. The launch of the vaccine is supported by a range of educational materials aimed at helping rabbit owners, adults and children alike, to understand the specific health and husbandry needs of their pet. In addition to the in-practice materials supporting the launch of NOBIVAC Myxo-RHD, communication tools will also be made available to help veterinary practices encourage new and existing owners to take their pet for vaccination and other advice relating to neutering, dentistry, ectoparasitic control and diet.

Myxomatosis and RHD are viral diseases in rabbits which are preventable by regular vaccination. When left untreated, Myxomatosis and RHD result in high mortality rates in both the wild and pet populations. In spite of this, vaccination rates remain low with around just 15 percent of rabbits receiving regular vaccinations. Rabbits are the third most popular pet species in Europe* and rabbit owners are highly motivated to seek veterinary advice once they are made aware of their pet?s specific health needs. They are, however, much less likely to take their pet to a veterinary practice than cat or dog owners or to seek advice on vaccination, neutering or other routine health matters.
