Uses

Action

  • Selamectin is a semi-synthetic avermectin.
  • It induces neuromuscular paralysis and/or death in susceptible invertebrate parasites by binding to and opening glutamate-gated chloride channels (glutamate agonists).

Indications

Dogs, cats
  • Treatment and prevention of flea infestation caused by Ctenocephalides spp  Ctenocephalides felis  .
  • As part of strategy for treatment of flea allergy dermatitis  Flea bite hypersensitivity  .
  • Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis with monthly administrations.

Dogs

  • Treatment of sarcoptic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei  Sarcoptes scabiei  .
  • Treatment of adult intestinal roundworms ( Toxocara canis ).
  • Control of tick ( Dermacentor variabilis ) infestations.

Cats

  • Treatment of ear mites  Otodectes disease  ( Otodectes cynotis  Otodectes cynotis  ).
  • Treatment of adult intestinal roundworms ( Toxocara cati  Toxocara cati  ).
  • Treatment of adult intestinal hookworms ( Ancylostoma tubaeforme ).

Adverse reactions

Effects of overdosage

  • Accidental ingestion of the recommended topical dose may result in hypersalivation or vomiting in cats.

Other reported reactions

  • In cats, occasional mild transient hair loss at site of application. In a small proportion of these cases, may also have transient focal irritation. These are normally self-resolving, but symptomatic therapy may be useful in some circumstances.
  • Local temporary clumping of the hair at the application site and/or the appearance of a small quantity of white powder. This is normal and will disappear within 24 hours of administration.
  • If animal licks site of application, a brief period of hypersalivation may rarely be observed in cats.
