Uses

Action

  • Causes release of acetylcholine from postganglionic site in myenteric plexus.
  • Prokinetic agent (promotes gastric emptying), related to metoclopramide, but has no central anti-emetic activity.

Indications

  • Management of:
    • Esphageal reflux.
    • Gastric stasis.
    • Megacolon  Megacolon  .

    Cisapride has been withdrawn for use in humans in both the UK (July 2000) and USA. This decision follows reports of rare, but serious, ventricular arrhythmias (some fatal) suspected to be caused by the drug.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Salivation and lip smacking.
  • Abominal cramps and diarrhea may develop.

Treatment

  • Administration of activated charcoal to animals given overdose may reduce absorption.
