Class of drug

  • Lipid soluble tetracycline antibiotic.

Uses

Action

  • Anti-bacterial (including spirochetes such as Helicobacter spp  Helicobacter spp  and Campylobacter spp  Campylobacter jejuni  , Leptospirosis, Borrelia).
  • Anti-rickettsial (eg hemobartonellosis, Rocky mountain spotted fever), Ehrlichiosis  Ehrlichiosis  .
  • Antimycoplasmal.  Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma  .
  • Anti-chlamydial  Chlamydophila felis  .
  • Excretion via the feces so it does not affect renal function.
  • Penetrates prostatic and bronchial secretions due to lipid solubility.
  • Lower affinity for calcium than other tetracyclines therefore lower risk of tooth discoloration.

Indications

  • Drug of choice in rickettsia, Borrelia, leptospirosis.
  • Drug of choice in avian chlamydiosis.
  • Recommended when tetracyclines are indicated in animals with renal impairment.
  • Preferred by some to oxytetracycline for use in birds.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Esophagitis and esophageal ulceration.
  • Photodermatitis.
