Action
- Anti-bacterial (including spirochetes such as Helicobacter spp
and Campylobacter spp
, Leptospirosis, Borrelia). - Anti-rickettsial (eg hemobartonellosis, Rocky mountain spotted fever), Ehrlichiosis
. - Antimycoplasmal.
. - Anti-chlamydial
. - Excretion via the feces so it does not affect renal function.
- Penetrates prostatic and bronchial secretions due to lipid solubility.
- Lower affinity for calcium than other tetracyclines therefore lower risk of tooth discoloration.
Indications
- Drug of choice in rickettsia, Borrelia, leptospirosis.
- Drug of choice in avian chlamydiosis.
- Recommended when tetracyclines are indicated in animals with renal impairment.
- Preferred by some to oxytetracycline for use in birds.
Adverse reactions
Other reported reactions
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
- Esophagitis and esophageal ulceration.
- Photodermatitis.
