  • Fluorinated pyrimidine antifungal agent.

Uses

Action

  • Fungal cells convert flucytosine (5-FC) into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) which inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis in the cell.
  • Mammalian cells are spared.

Indications

  • Cryptococcosis spp  Cryptococcosis  (often in conjunction with amphotericin B  Amphotericin B  ) or ketoconazole  Ketoconazole  .
  • Systemic and urinary yeast infections (eg candidiasis  Candida albicans  ).
  • Narrow spectrum of antifungal activity - most strains of Aspergillus and dermatophytes are not susceptible.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Resistance develops readily.

Treatment

  • Alleviate vomiting and diarrhea by dosing over 15 minutes.
