  • Fentanyl.

Class of drug

  • Synthetic mu opioid analgesic.

Uses

Action

  • Fentanyl opioid analgesic   →   profound analgesia.
  • Does not usually produce loss of consciousness.
  • Onset of action is 2 min and duration of activity is 15-25 min.
    Short duration, may be inappropriate for some procedures.

Indications

  • Analgesia.
  • Given:
    Either Alone.
    Or In combination with other anesthetic agents, eg diazepam  Diazepam  or midazolam  Midazolam  . Often used as part of a balanced anesthetic maintenance protocol.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Profound respiratory depression (control with intermittent positive pressure ventilation).
  • Bradycardia.

Treatment

  • Naloxone  Naloxone  for respiratory depression; may reverse analgesic effects, repeated doses may be required.
  • In small animals sedative effects can be reversed with buprenorphine  Buprenorphine  or butorphanol  Butorphanol tartrate  while maintaining analgesia.
