Class of drug
- Class 1a antidysrhythmic agent.
Uses
Action
- Stabilizes the cell membrane of cardiac myocytes, thereby decreasing their excitability.
- Electrical conduction is slowed through the bundle of His, atrium and ventricle.
- The refractory period is prolonged in the atrium when compared to the ventricle.
- At therapeutic doses cardiac output is usually unaffected unless there is pre-existing myocardial damage while slight vagolytic effects, associated with mild increases in heart rate, may be seen.
Higher doses lead to the development of an AV block and ventricular extrasystoles.
Indications
- Management of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular premature complexes
in the dog.
Adverse reactions
Other reported reactions
- Weakness.
- Vomiting.
- Diarrhea.
- Pyrexia.
- Hypotension (particularly with too rapid IV administration).
- Myocardial depression (widening of QRS and QT intervals, AV block and decreased contractility).
