Action

  • A corticosteroid with 5 times the anti-inflammatory potency of hydrocortisone (cortisol) and 20% more potency than prednisolone.
  • On a dose basis 0.8mg methylprednisolone is equivalent to 1mg prednisolone.
  • Has minimal mineralocorticoid activity, unlike hydrocortisone or prednisolone.
  • May be long acting (as acetate)

Indications

  • Anti-inflammatory suitable for alternate day use.
  • Treatment for shock.

  • Elevated liver enzymes.
  • Weight loss.
  • Polyuria/polydipsia.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Gastrointestinal ulceration.
  • Chronic use may lead to the development of hyperadrenocorticism.
