  • Osmotic diuretic.

Uses

Action

  • An osmotic diuretic which acts by elevating the osmolarity of glomerular filtrate thereby causing water to be retained within the nephron and increasing the excretion of sodium and chloride.

Indications

  • Indicated to promote diuresis in the early stages of oliguric renal failure.
  • Promote excretion of toxic substances.
  • Decrease intraocular pressure in glaucoma  Glaucoma  .
  • To help reduce increased intracranial pressure and decrease cerebral edema.
  • Not suitable for the mobilization of local or general edema as it may cause cardiac overload.
  • May act as a free radical scavenger and may thus be useful in managing reperfusion injury.

  • Extravasation causes inflammation and thrombophlebitis.
