Name
- Insulin.
Class of drug
- Polypeptide hormone.
Uses
Action
- Insulin plays a key role in the regulation of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism.
- Primary action is glucose metabolism. Insulin lowers blood glocose levels by stimulating peripheral glucose uptake (especially skeletal muscle and fat) and by inhibiting hepatic glucose production.
- Insulin also inhibits breakdown of fat (lipolysis), protein (proteolysis) and enhances protein synthesis.
