  • Hydralazine.

Class of drug

  • Peripheral vasodilator.

Uses

Action

  • Acts directly on arteriolar smooth muscle causing vasodilation, possibly by altering calcium handling by vascular smooth muscle cells.
  • Can decrease systemic vascular resistance to about 50% of baseline value.
  • Reduces afterload.
  • Rarely used in cats for heart failure.

Indications

  • CHF due to valve disease. Does not benefit patients with myocardial failure.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Severe hypotension (monitor and adjust doses as necessary).
  • Anorexia and vomiting (commonly seen in cats).
  • Reflex sinus tachycardia.

Treatment

Tachycardia
  • Digoxin therapy or beta-blockers.

Antidote for overdose

  • Pressor support (fluids).
