Action
- H2 receptor antagonist.
- Prevents activation of suppressor T-cells by histamine.
Indications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers.
- Uremic
gastritis.
- Stress or drug-related erosive gastritis.
- Esophagitis

- Hypersecretory conditions secondary to gastrinoma or mastocytosis

- Adjunctively to reverse metabolic alkalosis.
- May be useful as an immunomodulating agent by preventing activation of suppressor T-cells by histamine, although evidence is lacking.

Other reported reactions
- Cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension (IV route).
- Hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
- Adverse effects are rare in animals; headache, gynecomastia and decreased libido in humans.
Treatment
- If used by the IV route, administer over 30 minutes to prevent cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension.
