Action

  • H2 receptor antagonist.
  • Prevents activation of suppressor T-cells by histamine.

Indications

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers.
  • Uremic  Uremia  gastritis.
  • Stress or drug-related erosive gastritis.
  • Esophagitis  Esophagitis  .
  • Hypersecretory conditions secondary to gastrinoma or mastocytosis  Mastocytoma  .
  • Adjunctively to reverse metabolic alkalosis.
  • May be useful as an immunomodulating agent by preventing activation of suppressor T-cells by histamine, although evidence is lacking.

Other reported reactions

  • Cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension (IV route).
  • Hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
  • Adverse effects are rare in animals; headache, gynecomastia and decreased libido in humans.

Treatment

  • If used by the IV route, administer over 30 minutes to prevent cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension.
