- One of the earliest recognized UK breeds, developed from shorthaired non-pedigree cats.
- Shorthairs have been awarded Championship status, with the exception of lilac self (Provisional from June 1998), chocolate, red self and chocolate and lilac tabbies (Preliminary status).
- A sturdy, independent breed with a quiet voice.
- Needs regular grooming.
