Topical agents

  • Treatment of fungal infections of skin, ear and eye.

Skin infections

  • Successful treatment depends on management which limits infection, eg grooming, clipping, isolation, cleansing agents for animal and environment.
  • Systemic agents may be used also.
  • Dermatophytoses :  Dermatophytosis  commonly caused by Trichophyton spp  Trichophyton spp  and Microsporum  Microsporum canis  :
    • Enilconazole *  Enilconazole  wash.
  • Pruritic skin disease , eg seborrhea  Primary seborrhea  and otitis externa  Otitis externa  caused by Malassezia pachydermatis :
    • Enilconazole *  Enilconazole  wash.
    • Ketoconazole *  Ketoconazole  shampoo.
    • Miconazole *  Miconazole  Chlorhexidine *  Chlorhexidine  shampoo.
  • Others :
    • Povidone-iodine  Povidone-iodine  solution.

Ear infections

  • Usually combination preparations.
  • Yeasts :
    • Nystatin *  Nystatin  .
    • Miconazole *  Miconazole  .
    • Tiabendazole *  Tiabendazole  .

Eye infections

  • Conditions may be superficial, eg mycotic keratitis  Keratitis  or intra-ocular, eg mycotic endophthalmitis.
  • Most topical preparations have poor corneal penetration, so systemic preparations preferred.

Aspergillosis

  • For systemic disease  Aspergillosis   (rare in cats).
  • Aspergillus fumigatus  Aspergillus fumigatus  : treatment with systemic ketoconazole *  Ketoconazole  .
