Introduction

  • Rare syndrome characterized by widespread excessive hair shedding.
  • Cause : chemotherapy or catastrophic disease   →   damages shaft of growing hairs.
  • Treatment : none.
  • Prognosis : good.

Diagnosis

Clinical signs

  • Excessive hair shedding.
  • Hairs broken midshaft with part of hair still retained in follicle.
  • No inflammatory skin changes.
  • Symmetrical alopecia over trunk.

  • Causes of symmetrical alopecia .

Sequelae

Prognosis

  • Excellent: spontaneous resolution, unless inciting factor repeated.
  • However, often associated with severe disease.

Expected response to treatment

  • Hair re-growth within 6-8 weeks.
