Classification
Taxonomy
- Class: Mesomycetozoea (previously Icthyosporea ).
- Order: Icthyophonida.
- Genus: Rhinosporidium.
- Species: seeberi.
- Belongs to a novel clade of aquatic protistan parasites which that are on the boundary between animals and fungi.
- Previously described as a fungal organism of unknown classification.
Distribution
- Endemic in India, Sri Lanka and Argentina.
- Sporadic occurrence in United States.
- Rarely reported from human cases in Europe.
Significance
- Cause of disease in domestic animals including dogs, cats and horses, people and birds.
- Cutaneous and sub-cutaneous disease (mucosal).
- In dogs and cats rarely systemic disease - usually limited to mucous membranes of nasal cavity.
- Disease characterized by the development of polyps
