Distribution
- Worldwide.
- Prevalence 80-90% in some areas, as low as 1% in others.
Significance
- There is a risk of fetal damage following maternal infection in humans.
- Studies have shown that the risk of women developing toxoplasmosis after eating undercooked meat is 10 times higher than the risk of infection from cats/soil.
- Causes toxoplasmosis
in cat (definitive host) and any mammal (intermediate hosts), zoonosis.
