Distribution
- Ubiquitous in donkeys
.
- Worldwide.
- Less common in horses (diagnosed in 3% of horses referred for respiratory disease). In as many as 2% and 10% on fecal culture and post mortem examination but prevalence declining with use of macrocyclic lactones.
- Occurs mainly when horses sharing pasture with unwormed donkeys, but horses, particularly young horses, can maintain transmission.
Significance
- Not normally associated with clinical signs in donkeys.
- Infection can be pathogenic in horses causing respiratory symptoms.
