Taxonomy

  • Phylum: Nematoda .
  • Superfamily: Trichostrongyloidea .
  • Family: Dictyocaulidae .
  • Genus: Dictyocaulus .
  • Species: arnfieldi .

Distribution

  • Ubiquitous in donkeys  Donkey  .
  • Worldwide.
  • Less common in horses (diagnosed in 3% of horses referred for respiratory disease). In as many as 2% and 10% on fecal culture and post mortem examination but prevalence declining with use of macrocyclic lactones.
  • Occurs mainly when horses sharing pasture with unwormed donkeys, but horses, particularly young horses, can maintain transmission.

Significance

  • Not normally associated with clinical signs in donkeys.
  • Infection can be pathogenic in horses causing respiratory symptoms.
