National Canine Defence League

Charity Number 227523

The National Canine Defence League (NCDL) was founded in 1891 “to protect dogs from torture and ill-usage of every kind”. A ‘small party of gentlemen’, assembled by Lady Gertrude Stock during the first Crufts dog show, vowed to campaign for the protection of stray dogs and the provision of adequate veterinary care. They also vowed to campaign against muzzling, prolonged chaining and experimentation on dogs.

The NCDL will never turn down a reasonable request for help. By 1902 membership had reached 1000 and this grew to 6500 in 1910. The NCDL currently has 300,000 members and supporters.

Current campaigns include:

  • Stop puppy farming
  • Dog fouling
  • Dangerous dogs
  • Pathway (promoting responsible pet ownership and encouraging housing providers to develop positive pet policies)
  • Greyhounds (re-homing ex-racing greyhounds)
  • Dog car safety
  • The Hope Project (veterinary care voucher scheme for dogs owned by homeless people)
  • Shock collars

A new re-homing centre was opened in Snetterton, Norfolk, in 2001. The centre can care for up to 70 dogs at a time and joins the existing network of re-homing centres. For directions to your nearest centre, call the Re-homing Hotline 08457 646 000
