Introduction

  • To introduce a Foley catheter into the bladder.

Uses

  • To perform diagnostic radiology, eg cystourethrogram.
  • Urinary output measurement in acute renal failure Kidney: acute renal failure.
  • → Urinary obstruction.
  • → Urine sampling.

Advantages

  • Can be performed in conscious animal, although sedation and/or analgesia may be required.

Disadvantages

  • May introduce bacterial infection.

Materials required

Minimum equipment

  • Foley catheter.
  • Guide wire.

Ideal equipment

  • Speculum Speculum.

Minimum consumables

  • 5 ml syringe of saline.
  • Butterfly tapes.
  • Suture material and needle.

Ideal consumables

  • Sterile surgical gloves.
