Introduction

  • Urine sample collection with minimal contamination.

Uses

  • Urine culture.
  • → Urinalysis - for the diagnosis of urinary tract disorders.
  • → Emergency drainage of urinary bladder in cases with outflow obstruction Urethra: obstruction if a catheter can not be passed.

Advantages

  • No contamination by urethra.

Disadvantages

  • Requires co-operative patient.

  • <5 min.

Requirements

Materials required

Minimum consumables

  • 22G 1 inch needle.
  • Sterile 5 ml syringe.
  • Alcohol swab.

Sequelae

Complications

  • → Trauma to bladder wall.
  • → Peritonitis Peritonitis.
  • → Adhesions.

Reasons for treatment failure

  • Insufficient volume of urine in bladder.
  • Contamination of sample with blood.
  • Contamination of sample with colonic bacteria.
