Overview

  • Plasma concentrations of glucose Blood biochemistry: glucose and insulin are usually tightly linked.
  • Alterations in [glucose] result in rapid alteration of [insulin] to bring [glucose] back to normal range.

Uses

Alone

  • In diagnosis of insulinoma Pancreas: neoplasia: insulinoma either in single sample analysis or during glucose tolerance test Glucose tolerance test.

In combination

  • In conjunction with glucose Blood biochemistry: glucose for insulin:glucose ratio Insulin:glucose ratio.

Result data

Normal (reference) values

  • Normal fasted 6-22 U/ml.
  • >50 U/ml → abnormal.

Abnormal values

  • Values > normal in face of hypoglycemia (inappropriate response) may → insulinoma.
