Overview

  • Plasmin acts on fibrin or fibrinogen → fibrin degradation products (FDPs).
  • Half life of FDPs in circulation is 9-12 h.
  • Accumulation of FDPs → hemostatic abnormalities.

Uses

In combination

  • Other tests for diagnosis of fibrinolysis, which may occur with DIC Disseminated intravascular coagulation , thrombus formation, internal bleeding or hematomas.

Result data

Normal (reference) values

  • <10 microg/ml.

Abnormal values

  • Increased in DIC Disseminated intravascular coagulation.
  • Increased levels → increased fibrinolytic activity and or reduced phagocytic removal of FDPs from circulation.
  • Increases - DIC, thrombosis, internal hemorrhage, hematomas.
