  • 10 times more potent than cimetidine Cimetidine in inhibiting gastric acid secretion and has a longer duration of activity (more than 24 hours).
  • Cytoprotective (by enhancing mucosal cell prostaglandin production) and acid-reducing properties.

Indications

  • Gastric hyperacidity Stomach: chronic gastritis.
  • Gastrointestinal ulcers Gastric ulceration.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (gastrinoma) Pancreas: neoplasia: gastrinoma.
  • Helicobactergastritis Gastritis: helicobacter.

Adverse reactions

Other reported reactions

  • Nausea, diarrhea, constipation (humans).
  • Skin rashes (humans).
  • Chronic suppression of acid secretion has caused hypergastrinemia in laboratory animals leading to mucosal cell hyperplasia, rugal hypertrophy and the development of carcinoids so treatment for maximum of 8 weeks has been recommended.
