Action

  • An opioid antagonist with agonist activity.
  • Analgesic effects are seen within 15 min and may persist for up to 3 hours. Some research data would suggest it lasts only 45-60 minutes.
  • Sedative effects may be recognized for up to 3 hours.

Indications

  • Antitussive/analgesic.

  • Prolonged activity may occur when high doses are administered to patients with either impaired hepatic or renal function or in overdose situations.

Treatment

  • Treat with naloxone Naloxone if necessary and antagonism of analgesia is justified.
