Uses

Action

  • A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which inhibits cyclo-oxygenase-1 enzyme thereby limiting prostaglandin production.
  • NSAIDs have antipyretic, analgesic Analgesia: overview , anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet effects.

Indications

  • Control of mild to moderate pain and inflammation in osteoarthritic conditions Arthritis: osteoarthritis.

Adverse reactions

Effects of overdosage

  • Severe toxicity (usually with an acute overdose) may present with vomiting, pyrexia, metabolic acidosis, depression, coma, seizures and GI bleeding.

Other reported reactions

  • Gastrointestinal irritation and ulceration.
  • Renal papillary necrosis (renal failure), particularly if hypotension, dehydration or other nephrotoxic drugs are present.
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Hepatotoxicity (cholestatic and parenchymal damage).
  • Agranulocytosis.
  • Bone marrow suppression (including aplastic anemia).
  • Fluid retention which may precipitate cardiac failure.

Antidote for overdose

  • Empty gut.
  • Treat acidosis.
  • Alkalinize urine with sodium bicarbonate Sodium bicarbonate.
  • Supportive therapy.
