Name
- Penicillin G.
Class of drug
- Penicillin antibiotic.
Uses
Action
- Penicillin G is a beta-lactamase-susceptible, beta lactam antibiotic.
- Binds to penicillin-binding proteins near bacterial cell walls, decreasing bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity, and affecting cell division, growth and septum formation.
- Bactericidal.
- As mammalian cells lack a cell wall the beta-lactam antibiotics are safe.
- Penicillin G has a narrow spectrum of activity and is susceptible to acid degradation in the stomach.
Indications
- Used parenterally to treat serious infections caused by sensitive organisms, eg Streptococcusspp
, Clostridiumspp
, Borrelia borgderferi
, some Staphylococcusspp and fusospirochetes. - When used for 'blind' therapy of undiagnosed serious infections penicillins may be given in conjunction with gentamicin
and/or metronidazole
.
