Uses

Action

  • Penicillin G is a beta-lactamase-susceptible, beta lactam antibiotic.
  • Binds to penicillin-binding proteins near bacterial cell walls, decreasing bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity, and affecting cell division, growth and septum formation.
  • Bactericidal.
  • As mammalian cells lack a cell wall the beta-lactam antibiotics are safe.
  • Penicillin G has a narrow spectrum of activity and is susceptible to acid degradation in the stomach.

Indications

  • Used parenterally to treat serious infections caused by sensitive organisms, eg Streptococcusspp Streptococcus spp , Clostridiumspp Clostridia spp , Borrelia borgderferi Borrelia burgdorferi , some Staphylococcusspp and fusospirochetes.
  • When used for 'blind' therapy of undiagnosed serious infections penicillins may be given in conjunction with gentamicin Gentamicin and/or metronidazole Metronidazole.
