Introduction
- Employing nutritional therapies in the management of diseases has become a major focus of veterinary clinical nutrition. Strategies for the management of both acute and chronic diseases in small animals have been developed and as a result, many especially formulated diets are now available in the market.
- The underlying principle of nutritional therapy relies in how nutrients could be used to modulate disease processes. In veterinary medicine successes of such approaches have been appreciated in the areas of cardiology, nephrology, diabetes mellitus, dermatology, and gastrointestinal disorders.
- On-going research may identify new nutritional approaches for other disorders and allow veterinary surgeons to complement current management strategies and ultimately improve the health and well-being of animals. This overview will highlight some of ways in which disease modulation can be achieved via nutritional therapies.
