Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Fungi - yeast.
  • Order: Cryptococcales.
  • Genus: Malassezia.

Significance

  • Occurs as a commensal in the oily areas of the ear of dogs, cats and other animals. Possibly pathogenic when it occurs in large numbers in otitis externa; main role may be as secondary invader in inflammatory skin disease.
