Classification

Taxonomy

  • Family: Parvoviridae.
  • Genus: Parvovirus.
  • CPV 1: also known as minute virus of canines.
  • CPV 2: several variants identified including CPV 2a, 2b and 2c.

Etymology

  • Latin: parvus - small.

Distribution

  • Worldwide.
  • For CPV 2 the proportion of the different variants (ie CPV 2a, 2b or 2c) depends on the country or geographical area.

Significance

  • Cause of acute generalized disease Parvovirus disease associated with CPV-2 characterized by sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
  • Depression, lymphopenia, and dehydration occur.
  • Mortality is higher in puppies, especially in those <2 weeks old.
  • Puppies infected when 3-8 weeks old may develop myocarditis, sometimes without clinical signs of enteritis.
