Classification
Taxonomy
- Family: Parvoviridae.
- Genus: Parvovirus.
- CPV 1: also known as minute virus of canines.
- CPV 2: several variants identified including CPV 2a, 2b and 2c.
Etymology
Distribution
- Worldwide.
- For CPV 2 the proportion of the different variants (ie CPV 2a, 2b or 2c) depends on the country or geographical area.
Significance
- Cause of acute generalized disease
characterized by sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
- Depression, lymphopenia, and dehydration occur.
- Mortality is higher in puppies, especially in those <2 weeks old.
- Puppies infected when 3-8 weeks old may develop myocarditis, sometimes without clinical signs of enteritis.
