Etymology

  • Pseudomonas: Gk: pseudes - false; monas - a unit.
  • Aeruginosa: Latin - full of copper rust or verdigris, hence green.

Distribution

  • Worldwide.

Significance

  • Almost exclusively saprophytic - found in soil, water, skin, mucous membranes, feces.
  • Opportunistic, rarely a primary pathogen.
