  • Originates from the French Plains of Beauce.
  • Also known in France by the familiar name of Bas Rouge or Red Stockings because of the deep/red markings on their legs.
  • Large, athletic and active with drop ears. Extremely trainable and loyal to their family.
  • A main breed characteristic is the large double dew-claws on the hind legs (actually real toe joints).

Disease predisposition

Colors, markings and patterns

  • Black and Tan: markings rich and bright. Tan above eyes, on side of muzzle, narrowing on to cheeks but not reaching under ears. Two spots preferred on fore chest rather than continuous band. Marked also on throat, under tail and on feet up to hock and pastern. Leg markings narrowing upwards on outside, but blending higher on inside. A few white hairs on chest permissible.
  • Tricolor - gray, black and tan: coat has gray and black patches which are evenly distributed over body, with more black than gray. Tan markings as in Black and Tan.
