- Originated in the United States for use as a companion and ratting dog.
- Active, well-mannered, thoughtful and entertaining, good with children and requires moderate exercise.
- Size makes it ideal for the urban environment, but is not suited to hotter climates.
- Proportionally large head often requires Caesarean deliveries of puppies.
US
- Developed in the USA, as the result of crossing an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier.
- The breed is famed for its sunny disposition.
- Content to live in the country or in the city, the Boston is highly adaptable and intelligent
- Often referred to as the American gentleman among dogs.

Colors, markings and patterns
- Brindle with white markings; brindle must show throughout body distinctly; black with white markings but brindles with white markings preferred.
- Ideal markings: white muzzle, even white blaze over head, collar, breast, part or whole of forelegs, and hindlegs below hocks.
