- Originated in France; breed is established in the UK and the USA.
- Used originally to hunt hares.
- Today's Basset is lower to the ground and heavier than its hunting forebears.
- Friendly and patient, makes good companion even though they can be stubborn at times.
- Do not need a great amount of exercise.

Colors, markings and patterns
- Generally black, white and tan (tri-color); lemon and white (bi-color); but any recognized hound color is acceptable.
