General information

  • Originated in Switzerland as a companion, draught worker and for making trails through fresh snow.
  • Temperament is usually kind and trustworthy.
  • Unsuitable for the urban environment or living in a modest household due to its size.
  • Good with children. Good family pet if the owner can cope with the grooming, the sheer size and the problems that brings.
  • One downside - the breed tends to slobber a lot!

  • Hip dysplasia Hip: dysplasia
  • Entropion/ectropion Entropion / Ectropion.
  • Osteochondritis dissecans Elbow: osteochondritis dissecans.
  • Bone tumors.
  • Cruciate ligament rupture.

Colors, markings and patterns

  • Orange, mahogany-brindle, red-brindle, white with patches on body of any of the above named colors.
  • Markings as follows: white muzzle; white blaze on face; white collar; white chest; white forelimbs, feet and end of tail; black shadings on face and ears.
