General information

  • An English breed produced from the selective breeding of smaller spaniels.
  • At one time known as the English Toy Spaniel, the breed gained its current name from one of its keenest admirers (King Charles II).
  • Its size and affectionate nature make this an ideal companion dog.
  • Requires only moderate exercise.
  • The long silky coats can be either straight or wavy and need regular grooming to keep the longer coat tangle free.
  • Can be nervous of strangers.

Disease predisposition

  • Luxating patellae.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Microphthalmos.
  • Brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome.

Colors, markings and patterns

  • Black and tan: rich glossy black, with bright mahogany tan markings on muzzle, limbs, chest, linings of ears, under tail and spots over eyes. White patch on chest undesirable.
  • Tricolor: ground pearly white, with well distributed black patches, brilliant tan markings on cheeks, linings of ears, under tail and spots over eyes. Wide white blaze between eyes and up forehead.
  • Blenheim: ground pearly white with well distributed chestnut red patches. Wide clear blaze with the `spot' in center of skull - should be a clear chestnut red mark about the size of a penny.
  • Ruby: whole colored, rich chestnut red. White patch on chest highly undesirable.
