General information

  • Originated in Britain for the sport of bull baiting.
  • Once very aggressive in nature, it is now a very gentle dog with a great personality.
  • Now bred specifically for the show ring, it makes a good companion and requires little exercise or grooming.
  • Is good with other dogs and children.
  • Does not suit a hot climate.

Disease predisposition

  • Deafness.
  • Entropion Entropion /ectropion Ectropion.
  • Prolapsed nictitans gland Nictitans gland: prolapse.
  • Distichiasis Distichiasis.
  • Interdigital pyogranulomata.
  • Brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome Brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome.
  • Dystocia Dystocia.
  • Seasonal flank alopecia Skin: idiopathic cyclic flank alopecia.

Colors, markings and patterns

  • Whole or smut, ie whole color with black mask or muzzle.
  • Only whole colors (which should be brilliant and pure of their sort) viz, brindles, reds with their various shades, fawns, fallows, etc white and pied, ie combination of white with any of the foregoing colors.
  • Dudley (liver, brown or putty colored), black and black with tan highly undesirable.
